Serge Gnabry named Bayern Munich’s Player of the Season

Serge Gnabry saw off stiff competition from Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski to win Bayern Munich’s Player of the Season award.

Just three years ago, Gnabry’s career was in tatters following a dreadful loan spell at West Brom. He only made three appearances before head coach Tony Pulis sent him back to Arsenal as he “wasn’t at our level”.

The 23-year-old’s once-promising future was then in serious danger of being undone. Opportunities to impress at Arsenal were almost non-existent and nobody in England seemed keen to take him out on loan again.

Fast forward to 2019, though, Gnabry is now one of the main stars of a Bayern team that’s just won an eighth successive Bundesliga title.

The winger had a breakthrough campaign in his first full season at the Allianz Arena. He even provided established stars Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery with some stiff competition for a spot down the flanks.

Gnabry finished the season off with a tally of 13 goals and nine assists in 42 appearances. The former Arsenal man also won his first league crown and DFB Cup.

Therefore, Bayern fans voted him as their best player for the season with 27.9% of almost 35,000 votes. The club’s website announced that Joshua Kimmich (25.6%) and Robert Lewandowski (11.6%) rounded off the top-three.
