Sergio Aguero reached the 400-goal mark in his career after scoring twice to help Manchester City defeat Bournemouth 3-1.

It only took Aguero 15 minutes to get off the mark at the Vitality Stadium when he tapped in Kevin De Bruyne’s scuffed shot. The effort put City in control and seemingly set for a return to winning ways following last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

The in-form Raheem Sterling then doubled City’s advantage before Harry Wilson pulled one back for Bournemouth with a brilliant free-kick.

Wilson’s goal in the dying stages of the first-half, however, was nothing more than a false ray of hope for Bournemouth. While they generally got off to a decent start after the break, Aguero ended any chance of a comeback.

Following some good work from David Silva, who made his 400th City appearance, Aguero struck from 10 yards to secure a 3-1 victory for the Premier League champions and a 400th career goal.

It was also the 31-year-old’s fourth league goal of the season in just three games. The last player, in fact, to score in City’s opening three fixtures was fellow Argentine Carlos Tevez in 2012/13.

Another notable fact is that Aguero has now scored a staggering 235 goals in just 341 appearances for the Citizens. He previously scored 101 at Atletico Madrid and 23 times with boyhood club Independiente.

The City star has also registered an impressive haul of 41 goals in 96 outings for Argentina at international level.

“All the goals are important, I do not have a favourite. 400 goals – wow I did not know that,” Aguero told reporters after the match.

The goals are always important, you need them to win.

The striker’s team-up with Silva for his second goal also meant the duo have combined on 27 occasions in the Premier League. Only Thierry Henry and Robert Pires (29) along with Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard (36) boast better tallies.

Aguero later took to Twitter and wrote: “What a win! Very happy for scoring the 400th goal in my career.

“Big grats to David Silva for his 400th match with City too! C’mon, City”
