Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero was named as the Premier League Player of the Month for February with Pep Guardiola winning the manager’s award.
In just four league matches, Aguero collected an incredible haul of seven goals following hat-tricks against Arsenal and Chelsea along with a penalty against West Ham to help City retake top spot in the standings from Liverpool.
Virgil van Dijk, Paul Pogba, Sean Longstaff, Sadio Mane, Ashley Barnes, Wilfried Zaha and Luke Shaw were all in the running for the Premier League Player of the Month award.
But Aguero’s exploits in February convinced fans to give him the nod for the award as the Argentina international moved ahead of Mohamed Salah to take the lead of the Golden Boot race on 18 goals in 25 games.
It’s also the sixth time Aguero has been voted Player of the Month, which moves him level with Harry Kane and Steven Gerrard as the joint-record holders.
But, for Aguero, the focus lies with this season’s thrilling battle with Liverpool for the Premier League crown in what he expects will go right down to the wire.
“I learned during my years here that the title of the Premier League is always decided at the end,” Aguero told ESPN.
“There are some exceptions like what happened last season when we won the league a month and a half before the end. But I don’t think this will happen any time soon.
“We made history getting 100 points, it’s a difficult feat, not easy to repeat something like that. In my eight seasons in the league, I remember that six of them were very close until the last weeks.
“Obviously we are in a great shape right now after coming back from a big points disadvantage against Liverpool. We knew that the key game to win was the one we played against them and from that moment we started to narrow the gap.
“We needed to win for them to see that we were pushing back. Now we are top and in a great position over Liverpool.”
Meanwhile, City boss Guardiola was named Manager of the Month for the sixth time in his Premier League career.
The Catalan coach fended off competition from Manchester United’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Arsenal’s Unai Emery.
City will be back in action on Saturday at home to Watford in the Premier League.
