Sergio Ramos joined Lionel Messi in the La Liga history books during Real Madrid’s 5-0 thrashing of city rivals CD Leganes on Wednesday night.
Ramos became only the second player to score in 16 successive La Liga seasons, after Messi, when he scored Real Madrid’s third goal against Leganes through a penalty.
Admittedly, though, the Spanish defender was lucky to reach the landmark when Juan Soriano saved his initial effort. However, the referee ordered a re-take upon deciding the Leganes keeper moved off his line.
And Ramos made sure not to fail at the second attempt to fire Real into a comfortable three-goal lead and join Messi in the record books.
Incidentally, the pair both scored their maiden La Liga goals during the 2004/05 campaign for their respective clubs.
At the time, Ramos was still at boyhood side Sevilla when he first found the back of the net. He’s since recorded an impressive 62 goals and 30 assists in 468 league appearances.
The four-time La Liga winner’s hopes of a fifth crown, of course, remain strong with Real just a point behind Messi’s Barcelona.
And Wednesday’s huge win has clearly given the squad a confidence boost, with Dani Carvajal crediting their strong start.

“The important thing was to get the three points,” said the Spanish full-back on the club’s website.
“We knew that it was an important game, in front of our fans, and everything worked out well. Our whirlwind start was the key to the game”.
“We totally outperformed Leganes in the opening hour. Taking a 3-0 lead into the break made it easier for us to go all out for the win. The team didn’t stop running, working and pressing them.”
Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane, meanwhile, praised Karim Benzema after taking his tally up to seven goals in nine games.
The French striker is tied with Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno and Loren of Real Betis at the top of the La Liga scoring charts.
Ramos and Real will return to action on Saturday at home to Real Betis in another league match.
