Quique Setien’s short reign at Barcelona is definitely not going to plan, as his side crash out of the Copa Del Rey after a 1-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao.
Barcelona’s season so far has certainly not gone to plan.
They fired their manager Ernesto Valverde because of his style of play. Then they hired Quique Setien who plays the Barcelona way but not very well.
To top all that the future of Lionel Messi is now up in the air after a very public fall out at boardroom level.
Having said all that the 2019/2020 season is not likely to be Barcelona’s best.
Today things got even worse, with an embarrassing loss to Athletic Bilbao. Which sees them crash out of the Copa Del Rey.
Setien fielded a strong side, perhaps the only notable absentee was Antoine Griezmann dropping to the bench, and Roberto replacing him up front.
Despite all the bad publicity. Fallouts with directors and rumors of a training ground bust with teammate Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Lionel Messi started.
Barca dominated possession and even had some chances to win the game early on. A penalty shout reject by the officials. Some great saves from Bilbao keeper Simon. Plus some poor finishing from talisman Messi.
Bilbao thought they had taken the lead in the first half, only for Williams’ goal to be ruled out for offside.
The game appeared to be heading for a goalless draw. Although Barcelona was trying desperately to get a winner.
However, in the 93rd minute, the upset came.
An inswinging cross from Gomez finds Williams on the edge of the six-yard box. This time there were no mistakes and no offside. He headed the ball away from Ter Stegen to seal the win.
The players and fans celebrated long after the final whistle, in what was a great victory for the Basque club.
