Sevilla manager Pablo Machin is disappointed to have lost out on Mariano Diaz to Real Madrid, but would be happy to have Lionel Messi instead
Diaz returned to Real on Wednesday after an impressive year at Lyon, which saw him score 21 goals.
Los Blancos exercised a clause that enabled them to bring back Diaz on a five-year contract for a reported €30m transfer fee.
But the Dominican Republic international seemed destined to join Sevilla at one point this summer before Real poached him.
Speaking ahead to Sevilla’s Europa League qualifier against Sigma Olomouc, Machin was asked which striker he would like to have in his team now.
“Messi! Is it impossible?” said Machin, according to Sport.
“Yes. It’s important to retain our sanity about those who could join.
“We’re happy with those who might arrive because they’ll make Sevilla greater.”
As for their failed attempt to sign another striker in Diaz, Machin said: “I was so excited for him to come here. I don’t usually speak with footballers as others are in charge of that.
“The player who does arrive will be a very good player.”
Sevilla head into tonight’s return leg at their Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium with a 1-0 aggregate led over Sigma Olomouc.
