Shakhtar Donetsk ran out comfortable winners against FC Basel to book their place in Europa League semi-finals against Inter Milan.

FC Basel were caught napping from the get-go. Shakhtar Donetsk took the lead in the second minute and did not allow the Swiss side back into the fixture.

The lead came through experienced Brazilian duo, Marlos, and Junior Moraes. Marlos swung in a cross from the right-hand side. Moraes was waiting in the area and headed into the net to give his side the lead.

Basel showed restraint but Shakhtar would double their lead twenty minutes later. Marlos would combine with compatriot Taison to pierce the Basel defense. A through ball found Taison, whose deflected shot went past the stranded Djordje Nikolic.

Basel duo, Fabian Frei and Taulant Xhaka tried time and again to conjure something from the wings, but failed in their attempts.

At the half-time stoppage, Shakhtar were in control of the game and only needed to negotiate the Swiss side’s attempts.

The Ukrainian side managed that effectively and added to their tally in the second half. Alan Patrick and Dodo got on the scoresheet to seal the tie.

Dutch forward, Ricky van Wolfswinkel, scored a consolation goal in stoppage time to give Basel some respite. Samuele Campo sent a ball into the area, which van Wolfswinkel tapped in to get on the scoreboard.

Shakhtar have a tough task on their hands in the semi-finals. They take on the challenge of Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan for a place in the final. The Nerazzurri overcame Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 to book their place.
