After what was arguably one of the best games of the year so far, Diego Simeone wanted to reflect on Atletico Madrid’s Copa del Rey elimination.

As the season progressed for Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, it was clear that they weren’t really playing on the level that people expected from them and getting eliminated in Copa del Rey by Girona is a very painful blow for the squad.

The Argentine manager was part of a very competitive match that ended up in a 4-4 aggregate draw, but where Girona got the next round ticket because they managed to score more goals as visitors.

Nikola Kalinic opened the score early in the first half after an assist from Diego Godin, then Girona turned the game around with a volley from Valery still on the first half and a header from Stuani already in the second half that came during a set-piece.

The Colchoneros scored the equalizer soon through Correa, who took advantage of a loose ball inside the box after Griezmann attempted to put it through the defense.

This match was wildly entertaining from start to finish, both sides wanted to get the ticket to the next round and Girona was surprisingly good during the second half.

The final minutes of the game were absolutely heart stopping from both sides, the two squads were all out for the win but only one came out on top.

Near the end, the French connection between Lemar and Griezmann made us all believe that Atletico would end up taking the larger piece of the pie after Antoine responded with a beautiful volley with practically no angle for Atletico Madrid’s third goal.

It was 4-3 in the aggregate and things seemed to be sealed for the Colchoneros, but there was one more shocking moment for this match. Borja Garcia connected the cross from Pedro Porro and managed to take a shot that was a bit weak but very well placed.

Goalkeeper Adan wasn’t able to reach for the ball and saw how Girona was tying the match, this meant elimination for the Colchoneros and a shocking early exit from Copa del Rey for a squad that is considered a favorite in European football right now.

The final minutes of the match were filled with desperation from all the Atletico fans at the Wanda Metropolitano, but the Colchoneros weren’t able to score that final goal that would’ve helped them get through in the competition during one of the most exciting matches of 2019 so far from all across Europe.

Girona slew the giant in Madrid, they did it with style and beautiful goals.

Right after the match, manager Diego Simeone wasn’t happy with the result but he was happy with the way in which his players competed against Girona.

The press conference right after the game was packed at the Metropolitano, everybody wanted to hear what ‘Cholo’ had to say after this painful defeat.

One journalist wanted to know about the Colchoneros’ possibilities of signing Alvaro Morata, but Simeone immediately trashed the conversation and decided to talk about the match.

“We are not going to talk about Morata because he is not with us,” he said after the match via Four Four Two.

“We understood that from the beginning of the match, we would be alright with [Thomas] Lemar and Kalinic as we gave rest to Griezmann. In the second half [Griezmann] came on and made it 3-2.”

“It was a beautiful match, a classic cup game,” added Simeone.

“We had the intention of winning at all times. We got an early goal and had chances to extend our lead. Girona’s physical nature was their greatest ally.”

“Congratulations to Girona – we gave everything, we continued to go for the comeback, but the 3-3 hurt us. I say to the fans what they saw: a side that gave everything. The intention was always to win the game.”

“Sometimes you play well and do not advance. I prefer to play badly and always go through.”
