Sir Alex was an agent for a day and got his client a 500% payraise

Sir Alex Ferguson had to act as an agent for Keith Gillespie one day and didn’t do bad at all, he managed to get him almost a 500% raise on his pay.

When Manchester United signed Andy Cole from Newcastle United, part of the deal saw United youngster Keith Gillespie move the other way.

Gillespie was ging to Newcastle and Cole was coming to Manchester.

The Northern Ireland international recalls how he arrived at Sheffield United’s Bramhall Lane expecting to play. Instead got the shock of his life.

Speaking to the Daily Mail Gillespie remembers vividly how it went down.

He said:

“Sir Alex pulled me aside and explained the situation.”

“I’d turned up expecting to play and now I was having to think about my future at the club. “

After the game, he met Newcastle boss Keegan who was waiting for him in Sheffield after the United game.

Then only 19 Gillespie didn’t even have an agent. Fergie was present in the discussions with Newcastle’s hierarchy.

He acted as the player’s agent.

Gillespie recalls he got him one heck of a deal, even if it did involve a little stretching of the truth.

He added:

“I had about a minute with Kevin and I was sold on the club, that was all it took.”

“But I didn’t have an agent so Sir Alex did it for me.”

“I was on £250 a week, he told them I was on £600.”

“He got them to double it to £1200 a week – I was delighted”
