Roma suffered a 2-0 defeat on Chris Smalling’s debut, but he is relishing the challenge of Italian football.

Chris Smalling arrived in Rome almost four weeks ago and finally made his debut for the club he is on loan to, Roma.

The result, a 2-0 home defeat to Atalanta was a disappointment, a  but Smalling was happy.

Speaking to the Roma official club website, asroma.com, he shared his experience from his first Serie A game.

He said:

“I’m happy to make my debut at home but disappointed not to win.”

“We have big dreams and aspirations this season and we need to win our home games.”

“We need to make sure we don’t slip up too many more times at home this season.”

He acknowledges the stark difference in Italian football to what he is used to but is relishing the challenge.

He added:

“I think that in Italy there are no easy games.”

“I have watched a lot of Italian matches, both before I got here and since I arrived. Each game is going to be a tough battle.”

“Each game is going to be a battle but that is a challenge I’m relishing.”

Smalling was glad to be back in action.

He continued:

“I enjoyed being back playing. It was my first game and I enjoyed playing at the stadium.”

“But I just want to help the club achieve some big targets this season.”

” I know that every game is going to be a battle and I’m ready for that – bring on Sunday.”

Smalling has been at United since 2010 and worled with Sir Alex Ferguson, David, Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Ryan Giggs, Jose Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Even with the experience of all those greats, Smalling still feels his game is improving tactically. Largely due to intense preparation manager, Paulo Fonseca goes through for each game.

He concluded:

“In training during the week we work on our tactics. That’s something I’ve noticed since being here.”

“We work very hard on tactics and we come into the game very well prepared,” added Smalling.”

“In each game, we know what the formation is going to be and how we are going to press etc, so we arrive for the game very well prepared.”
