Roberto Soldado made some poor choices as a youngster at Real Madrid, with role models like Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, and Raul and chose to follow others.
Former Tottenham Hotspur flop Roberto Soldado was in the same Los Blancos team as the like os Zidane, Figo, Carlos, Beckham, and Raul.
Apparently decision making was not Roberto Soldado’s best strength when he was a young footballer.
As a 16-year-old, in 2001 he found himself on the books at none other than Real Madrid.
By 2005 he was part of the first team.
By his own admission, he was surrounded by so many of the greats. These legends were not just professional on the pitch but of it too.
But Soldado made some very poor choices. Choices that meant his first-team career at Real lasted a mere 27 games.
In an interview with The Guardian, as he looks back now he knows he blew it.
“I was a kid when I was at Real Madrid, I didn’t take care of myself, I ate a lot and I drank a lot and I was always ready to go out.”
“There were players like Figo, Zidane or Raul who were very professional.”
“But I looked at others, I followed people who I shouldn’t have followed.”
“I see photos of how much I weighed then and I’m ashamed.”
“If I had taken better care and had more maturity, maybe I could have had more opportunities.”
“Someone should have taken me aside and slapped me.”
