Solskjaer compares Mason Greenwood to Man Utd icon Giggs

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has compared Mason Greenwood to Manchester United legend following his impressive rate of development.

Like Greenwood has done now, Giggs made his United first-team debut as a 17-year-old in March 1991 and quickly earned himself praise from the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

Meanwhile, Greenwood got his first taste of senior football in March of this year and he’s been in top form down the right wing for United in pre-season.

The England U-18 international took his tally up to two goals in three games after scoring the match-winner in United’s 1-0 International Champions Cup (ICC) victory over Inter Milan in Singapore.

And now Red Devils boss Solskjaer has compared Greenwood to an old team-mate of his in Giggs.

“The kid’s only 17 and he’s learning everyday training with these boys,” said Solskjaer, according to MEN.

“He’s been with us the last few months, he’s grown in confidence, he’s grown in stature and, as I said before, when you’ve got players who perform it’s difficult to keep them out.

“But we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground with him, he’s only 17, there’ll be ups and downs but he’s enjoying his football.

“Mason’s never been on my mind to send out on loan, he’s one we have to keep at our place, keep him and play him when we feel it’s good for him and at the moment he’s fine.

Frank Lampard, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Premier League

Lampard: “Chelsea are moving in the right direction”

Frank Lampard was a proud manager after Chelsea's 1-0 win over Newcastle United moved them into the Premier League top-four.

“He reminds me a little bit about the Giggsy story, you can’t really send him on loan and for me he’s ready to be in this squad.”

Another teenage star in Tahith Chong, on the other hand, didn’t have such a successful time out on the pitch like Greenwood.

The 19-year-old winger came on as a substitute for Daniel James in the second-half, but was subjected to a number of big challenges from Inter.

Solskjaer even withdrew Tahith Chong after just half an hour for Angel Gomes.

The Norwegian added: “You want competitive games and of course don’t expect anything different.

“In pre-season games, when it’s 0-0 it might be okay but when one team is leading the other team…

“Juan [Mata] got a few tackles, Tahith got a few tackles and Dan James. But we are here to prepare for the season and the game was really competitive.”

United will likely hope Greenwood continues his solid form for next Thursday’s second ICC match against Premier League rivals Tottenham in Shanghai, China.
