Solskjaer rules Romelu Lukaku out of Inter Milan clash

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed Romelu Lukaku is “not fit” for Manchester United’s International Champions Cup (ICC) opener against Inter Milan.

Lukaku, who is yet to feature in pre-season this summer, has been strongly linked with a move to Inter. In fact, the Italian club have even formally approached United over signing him.

But talks have seemingly stalled over the past week, with Inter struggling to match United’s reported asking price of €85m for Lukaku.

Now, the two European giants will face off against each other in Singapore on Saturday hoping to get their respective ICC campaigns off to a winning start.

Although Solskjaer confirmed Lukaku will still be unavailable for United, while refusing to shed any more light on the Belgian’s uncertain future.

“No he is not fit, he won’t be available no,” said the Red Devils boss, according to Football365.

“I don’t have any updates from the last time you asked me.”

Luke Shaw, on the other hand, was able to give the Red Devils a welcome boost by returning to training this week. He had been doubtful after coming off against Perth Glory with a hamstring problem, and missed Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Leeds United.

Meanwhile, an unwell goalkeeper David de Gea was also absent on Wednesday.

When asked about the duo, Solskjaer replied: “I think both will be available. Luke trained well yesterday, David we will try to get 60 or longer out of him.

“We will give players some 45, some 60, some 70. It is another stepping stone, we are not planning to swap them all on half time.”

Solskjaer also took a moment to praise the progress of Anthony Martial and teased a bright Old Trafford future for him.

The 23-year-old Frenchman scored the fourth goal against Leeds in Perth and may rival Marcus Rashford as United’s main centre-forward next season.

“Anthony can be a world-class forward,” added Solskjaer.

“I think if you followed Anthony the way he has come back to pre-season, his attitude is spot on. I think he has always got the quality and talent, so I expect him, and Marcus, to be even better than last season.

“Anthony had a top season when he came, I expect we will see a better Anthony next season.”

The United and Inter clash will begin at 13:30 (CET) on Saturday.
