The Sporting CP president has explained why he expects Cristiano Ronaldo to return to his boyhood club.

Frederico Varandas believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s close ties with Sporting CP mean a return to the club is very likely.

The Sporting president has revealed Ronaldo was one of the first people to congratulate him for the club’s first league title since 2002 this season and remains a supporter to this very day.

These remarks came shortly after Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, promised Sporting fans she would speak to him about returning to his boyhood side.

“I believe that he will come back one day,” Varandas told SIC.

“Ronaldo has always supported Sporting. He was one of the first people to send me a message of congratulations for winning the league.”

Of course, Ronaldo’s ties to Sporting are no secret. The 36-year-old began his senior career with the club in 2002 before jumping ship to Manchester United a year later.

But while there is a chance the star could leave Juventus soon, Varandas didn’t state when exactly CR7 could return to Sporting – all he said was ‘one day’.

Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has also played down speculation on the five-time Ballon d’Or winner making an emotional comeback in the summer.

“Cristiano is proud of the title won by Sporting, he has expressed it publicly. But for the moment, his career plans do not go through Portugal,” said Mendes recently.
