Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov offered an interview in which he revealed what he told his agent when a Manchester City came knocking on his door.

It’s time to remember Dimitar Berbatov, one of the last great strikers that Manchester United signed during the Ferguson era and had the nerve to snub an offer from neighbors Manchester City by telling his agent to fuck off. This was during the time when the Red Devils reigned supreme in England and were considered a title contender in European football, the time in which Cristiano Ronaldo was still part of the squad and every great player of that era wanted to play under Sir Alex Ferguson’s orders. Dimitar Berbatov had become one of the great strikers of the Premier League playing for Tottenham Hotspur, that player was one of the most coveted players in England at the time and we just found out that the two great clubs in the city of Manchester were after him. But when the time came for Berbatov to make a decision, it wasn’t even a contest.

The striker’s agent at the times was looking for the highest bidder for one of his star players, Berbatov had just finished a season with Spurs in which he scored 23 goals in 52 matches and he was one of Europe’s biggest targets at the moment. Manchester City was expanding, the take over from Sheik Mansour had just begun and they paid €35 million to Real Madrid for Brazilian forward Robinho at the time. But turns out that their first choice wasn’t the Brazil international at the moment, it was a Bulgarian forward who was one of the most exquisite players in the world at the moment and they offered Tottenham a reported €33 million for his services. But when the player’s agent came to tell him about the offer, Berbatov wanted to play for the biggest club in the world at the moment and he didn’t even hesitate to reject the Citizens’ offer.

During an interview with FourFourTwo magazine, Dimitar Berbatov said: “I don’t think it was that close, to be honest. My agent told me about some interest but I said, ‘Don’t even bother mentioning anyone else, I’m going to Man United,’ because of the history, the players, the tradition, everything. I think it was the night before City signed Robinho from Real Madrid and my agent said, ‘Berba, there’s another team in for you’. I said, ‘f***’ off, we’re going to Man United’. He said, ‘But they’ll give you more money!’ It’s not all about the money sometimes, though. I was like a horse with blinkers. For me it was the right decision because going to the top of the mountain was my dream, especially when you come from Eastern Europe, from a small town, and no one’s done it before you. It was a great feeling.”

Turns out that Berbatov was right to reject Manchester City because, during his four seasons at Manchester United, the forward scored 56 goals in 149 matches in all competitions. But what’s most important for him was the number of titles he won there, Berbatov was part of a squad that won two Premier League trophies, two Community Shields, one League Cup, and a FIFA Club World Cup. We also got to experience a truly skilled player with superior technical characteristics that gave him a different status compared to all his teammates, there was no other player at Manchester United with the ball control that Berbatov had and he gave us some very beautiful moments to remember with the Red Devils’ redshirt. It’s interesting to see how adamant the striker was about playing for Manchester United during that era, now the roles seem to be reversed as very few of the top players in Europe want to play in Manchester United and pretty much all of them want to play at Manchester City.
