Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marco van Basten crossed paths briefly at Ajax, it was there that the Swede laid down the challenge to the Dutchman.
Marco van Basten made his name as a prolific goalscorer for the dominant AC Milan side of the late ’80s and early ’90s. He won three Scudetto’s and two Champions Leagues while scoring 125 goals in 201 appearances.
His career was cut short at the age of 31 after a series of ankle injuries stopped him from playing any longer.
It was there that he encountered a young, talented and arrogant Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
In an interview reported by Football Italia, Van Basten admits, the then young Swede was not shy and laid down the challenge at their very first meeting.
“I went back to Ajax as a coach and there was one boy who provoked me.”
“You are Van Basten, he said and passed me the ball, show me what you can do.”
“Because of my ankle, I couldn’t anymore.”
“Who the boy was?”
” I’m sure you know him. He was called Zlatan, his surname is Ibrahimovic.”
Both players left the club not long after that encounter, but there are apparently no hard feelings.
