It looks like a four-horse race for the English Premier League’s (EPL) top goal scorer award for the 2021/22 campaign.

With the first month of the season out of the way, fans are already starting to see how their respective teams are shaping up in the final third.

Already, the odds are shortening on four potential top scorer candidates – and it is little surprise to find that Cristiano Ronaldo is right in the mix.

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku was Chelsea’s marquee signing of this summer’s transfer window. His return from Serie A champions Inter Milan has enhanced the attack of the 2020/21 Champions League winners and could be the difference between Thomas Tuchel’s men being top-four contenders and title contenders. Lukaku scored three goals in his opening three appearances, with his powerhouse style continuing to prove effective in the EPL, never giving defences a moment’s peace.

Cristiano Ronaldo

It was the fairytale return to Old Trafford for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese icon made his second debut in a Manchester United jersey against Newcastle and scored twice to help the Reds overcome the Magpies 4-1. He demonstrated no lack of desire in front of goal and the 36-year-old will be desperate to set high standards for himself and his United teammates. Despite being a couple of goals behind current top scorers Michail Antonio and Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo is the bookmakers’ joint-favourite to win the golden boot this season. He’s available at a best price of 11/4 with Betfair, which is currently offering a five-fold money back promotion, with refunds on up to five losing bets up for grabs by new customers.

Mohamed Salah

Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah is another leading contender that should never be discounted in front of goal. The Egyptian star has bagged three goals and two assists in his first four appearances for the Reds this term, suggesting that he is very much on song again. Ironically, Salah scored more goals (22) last season than in Liverpool’s title-winning year (19). If he can make it a fourth season in five scoring 20+ goals, Salah will be right up there competing for the golden boot.

Harry Kane

Tottenham’s Harry Kane is another who could prove a value option, given his odds have drifted out to 10/1 since the unsettling transfer speculation regarding a potential move to Manchester City. Kane has since committed his future to Spurs, but is yet to get on the scoresheet in three outings so far this season. As Tottenham’s primary source of goals, he will be backed to find his shooting boots and break that 20-goal barrier again this term.

A ‘wildcard’ suggestion

West Ham United’s Michail Antonio is in the form of his life. Playing at the top of David Moyes’ Hammers formation, Antonio’s speed, power and athleticism are the perfect foil for West Ham’s technically gifted midfielders. He’s so far scored four in four games, registering three assists to his name too. Providing Antonio can stay fit and the Hammers stay in form, his current 33/1 odds could plunge fast.
