The rise of Manchester City’s golden boy – Phil Foden

Let’s talk about Manchester City’s youngster Phil Foden today, one of the most exciting young talents in the Premier League.

Phil Foden is an 18-year old English football player, who plays as a midfielder for Manchester City and the England U-21 national team.

Born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, Phil supported the Citizens from a young age. He joined the Manchester City Football Academy at eight years old and played through various age categories for the club.

His breakthrough season came in 2016-17 when Foden noted 14 goals and 7 assists for the Manchester City U-18 side. He guided his team to the FA Youth Cup Final, but ended up on the losing side, suffering a 6-1 defeat to Chelsea’s youngsters.

In May 2017 Foden found his name on Steve Coopers’ England U-17 squad for the upcoming UEFA European Under-17 Championship in Croatia.

The young Citizen played an excellent tournament, scoring two goals and providing an assist, as England reached the EURO U-17 Final.

He even scored in the final against Spain, but the young lions conceded an equalizer in the sixth minute of the stoppage time and lost the game after the penalty shootout.

Later that summer, Foden was included in Manchester City’s squad for the club’s pre-season tour of the United States. He first impressed in a friendly game against Manchester United and then started in a 4–1 win over European champions Real Madrid.

After the EURO U-17 heartbreak against Spain in the final, Foden and England’s U-17 side traveled to India for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in October.

England started the game in miserable fashion, losing 2-0 in the first 30 minutes of the game. However, the young lions didn’t give up and, inspired by Manchester City’s starlet Phil Foden managed to get revenge over the Spanish youngsters, winning the game 5-2 to clinch the FIFA U-17 World Cup title.

He has played 34 games for the Citizens since then, scoring six goals across all competitions. His head coach Pep Guardiola is impressed with the 18-year old and expects Phil Foden to play an important role for City in the next decade.

“Phil, we know it, he’s young but he can do everything,” Guardiola said via Sky Sports. “He can create chances, he’s incredible with his vision. We can count on them and that’s good.

“Every day he is in the locker room, he is part of the group and we trust him. He’s absolutely ready to play with us. He did everything well.

“I’m happy with the way he plays. He’s at a good level. I assure you next year he will play more minutes. That’s the process. He’s 18 or 19. For the next decade, he will be important.”
