Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva hopes Neymar will remain at the club, but also wants his team-mate to be happy amid talk of a Barcelona return.
Speculation linking Neymar with a surprise Barcelona comeback has intensified greatly in the past few weeks. And the club’s vice-president Jordi Cardoner finally confirmed last Thursday the player’s desire to re-join them.
It does, though, remain unclear on whether Barcelona will go ahead and re-sign Neymar. Cardoner remained coy on this prospect despite admitting his admiration of the 27-year-old.
Apparently, Neymar is desperate to leave PSG this summer and has been discontent in France ever since he first set foot in the country.
Although the Brazil international’s desire to leave couldn’t come at a worst time for PSG, who are at serious risk of losing Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid. Reports broke out on Saturday in Spain claiming the 20-year-old will not sign a new contract with the Parisians.
Meanwhile, Dani Alves announced last weekend he will leave PSG after two years in the French capital.
But Silva hopes that Neymar can still be persuaded to stay at the Parc des Princes, while speaking ahead to Brazil’s Copa America semi-final clash with Argentina on Wednesday.
“The moment is not conducive to that. We’re in another competition,” said Silva, according to Fox Sports.
“Of course the will is huge for Ney to remain, but for him to be happy.
“Dani made a statement, he’s out, we lost a great champion and friend. Unfortunately, due to injury, he was out of the World Cup, but always a very positive guy. I hope he’s happy where he goes.”
Neymar finished last season with 23 goals and 13 assists in 28 appearances for PSG. However, the former Barcelona star’s campaign was spoilt by another metatarsal injury that saw him miss nearly four months of action.
Despite recovering in time for Brazil’s Copa America campaign, Neymar was ruled out after suffering an ankle injury in a friendly against Qatar this month.
