Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva revealed he feared that qualification to the Champions League knockout stages was out of their reach
The Ligue 1 leaders emerged Group C winners on Tuesday night after securing a comfortable 4-1 triumph over Red Star Belgrade due to goals from Edinson Cavani, Neymar, Marquinhos and Kylian Mbappe.
Before the final group game in Serbia, PSG had been level on points with Liverpool in second-place after challenging fixtures with the Reds and Napoli.
“The goal is achieved,” Silva told L’Equipe.
“I was a little scared this year that we do not go to the round of 16 because it was difficult. But in the difficulty, there are positive things.
“I’m happy with the last matches. I think mentally, since Naples, I have changed a lot. The draw in Naples was my fault. For the Liverpool game, I pushed the players a lot because I felt they needed them.
“If we had conceded a draw against Liverpool, we were almost eliminated. But we managed to win against a team that can still be a finalist this season.”
The former AC Milan defender was pleased with PSG’s teamwork against Red Star and hopes to see more of the same as the season goes on.
“Today was a little easier but when Belgrade scored, we stayed calm, patient,” added Silva.
“I feel we played more like a team. I hope we will continue like this until the end of the season.”
PSG will next face Dijon FCO away in Ligue 1 this Saturday.
