Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was delighted to have the last laugh against old side Atletico Madrid on Sunday in La Liga.

The Belgian international previously spent three years on loan at Atletico and made 154 appearances in the process, while winning La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Europa League.

But Courtois has been an unpopular figure at Atletico since completing his controversial €38.8m transfer from Chelsea to Real last summer.

Prior to playing in his first Madrid derby for Real, Atletico supporters took the occasion to make their feelings towards Courtois crystal clear by desecrating a plaque that had been dedicated to him outside of the Wanda Metropolitano with spit, beer and fake toy rats.

Though goals from Casemiro, Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale for Los Blancos ensured that it would be Courtouis who had the last laugh in the end with a 3-1 win.

Santiago Solari’s men have also leapfrogged Atletico into second-place in La Liga.

“We are all thrilled because we played well and deserved the win,” said Courtois on the club website.

“We’ve gone ahead in the league table, and we need to do that if we want to win LaLiga: win games and hope our rivals drop points.

“We need to do the same on Wednesday and put in a good Champions League performance”.

“The eleven players out there were convincing, we defended well and did well in attack. We knew they would attack from the off but we snuffed out the danger a bit at 0-1.

Valverde backs misfiring Barcelona to return to scoring

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde is confident that their recent struggles in front of goal are nothing more than a blip.

“At 1-1 we stayed calm and kept possession. Ramos took his penalty well, we knew he would get us a goal. He had to press in the first fifteen minutes of the second half, and score again to kill the game”.

He added: “I’m here to play games and win. I’ve got the utmost respect for Atletico Madrid and their fans, having been here for three years and enjoyed some fantastic moments.

“You’d like them to welcome you back in a different way, like at Chelsea. That’s the way it is if you sign for a big rival and these things happen. I’m focused on my work to try and win games alongside my teammates and we did just that today”.
