In the first shock of a very busy football Wednesday, FC Barcelona crashed at Leganes and Real Madrid did even worst against Sevilla FC.

What a day for giants Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga, they both lost their respective midweek match this Wednesday in their visit to different stadiums. Both the Catalan club and Los Blancos reached this point in the competition tied with 13 points and both had complicated visits to Leganes and Sevilla, respectively. The Catalan club played earlier and they even got ahead in the scoreboard with a beautiful Coutinho volley, but the second half was a complete disaster in which Gerard Pique committed several mistakes in the span of just a couple of minutes. The first one he made was after only six minutes of the second half, he failed to cover the space where a cross was sent by Jonathan Gonzalez that El Zhar quickly responded to with a poor defensive coverage by Thomas Vermaelen. Not even a minute had passed when Pique was committing another mistake and literally gifted the ball to Oscar Rodriguez for the shocking second goal scored by Leganes. This was a horror show for the Catalan club, who were losing their opportunity of getting ahead in La Liga table just minutes before the match between Sevilla and Real Madrid started. Lionel Messi’s absence was one of the biggest news of this match, the Catalan club lost a match as the leader of the competition against the last place for the first time ever.

Sevilla responded accordingly vs Real Madrid.

But things weren’t going to get any easier for Real Madrid either, as they were visiting Sevilla FC at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium and were in for a truly horrible night when they realized what life is without Cristiano Ronaldo playing on their side. The first half was more than enough for them to get a beating by the Andalusian side, Andre Silva scored a brace before the 20th minute of the match, and French striker Wissam Ben Yedder scored the third goal before halftime. The biggest flop for Real Madrid on this match was Marcelo, who once again proved that he is one of the worst defenders Los Blancos have and he cannot react well under pressure. But Sevilla was the squad that needed to take all the credit this Wednesday, they really needed a night like the one they got today against one of La Liga’s leaders. All Real Madrid players were eager to play the second half, they came back to the pitch early and were adamant about not committing any more mistakes like the ones they made during the first half. All Sevilla needed was to protect the advantage they already had, but it wasn’t going to be easy because Real Madrid came into the field completely focused for the second half.

But despite having a long 45 minutes to get back in the game, Real Madrid was never able to concentrate and Sevilla was able to manage the result for the remains of this match with the support of their supporters at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium. And thus, this Wednesday will be remembered by Real Madrid and Barcelona for a long time, as the day in which both Spanish giants lost their respective matches and lost the chance to take the lead in La Liga. But the worst part about all this, is that Real Madrid is the squad that has the least chances of recovering from this massive blow because they will have to play against Atletico Madrid next weekend. Barcelona on their part, play at home as well but against Athletic Club and they may have a better opportunity to take La Liga’s lead this early in the competition. But both squads proved today that they are not as invincible as everybody thought they actually were, any club in La Liga can defeat them this season considering how poor they played this Wednesday. This turns the domestic competition in Spain into a more exciting tournament, because now things are more balanced than during previous years.
