Mario Coluna played a vital role for the Portugal national team in the 1966 FIFA World Cup, when they noted their best-ever finish at a World Cup, winning the third place. His performances were so impressive in that tournament that he was named in the All-Star team, completing a midfield that included legends such as Bobby Charlton and Franz Beckenbauer.
