The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) postponed the Eredivisie on March 12, following the coronavirus pandemic. It was only initially until March 31. But a lack of improvement led the government to ban all events until June, including football and any other sporting activities.
Ajax, AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven were among several clubs to suggest an unwillingness to return to action.
The KNVB soon cancelled the Eredivisie altogether, following the government’s announcement that all events would remain suspended until September 1; unless given authorisation.
No teams won the league or suffered relegation due to the cancellation.
