Bayern Munich – 5 times
Three players have won this prestigious award for Bayern in Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller and current chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
Muller was the man to deliver the first Ballon d’Or to Munich in 1972 after beating England’s Bobby Moore and Luigi Riva of Italy.
Beckenbauer then followed this up two years by beating Germans Muller and Gunter Netzer by two points. It marked the only time in history that Bayern had completed a 1-2 in the voting panel.
After some near-misses, Beckenbauer won a second and final Ballon d’Or in 1976.
But Bayern only had to wait another four years before Rummenigge collected back-to-back awards between 1980 and 1981. However, the German giants have never won it since.
The closest they came was in 1995 when Jürgen Klinsmann finished runner-up to George Weah.
