Although he didn’t play in the MLS, Franz Beckenbauer is one of the European pioneers who came to the United States to win trophies as a veteran.
With Pele setting the standard years before he did for the New York Cosmos, the German defender decided to play for the same club and won three NASL domestic titles during his time in the country.
Franz even translated his rivalry with Johan Cruyff to the US when the Dutch legend also made a brief cameo in two clubs from the country.
