Red card on Argentina debut
Messi is Argentina’s all-time record scorer on 70 goals in 138 appearances, and the national side’s current captain. Many impressive performances have also come his way in the last 14 years.
And his debut against Hungary in August 2005 was definitely a memorable one – just not the way you’d expect.
In fact, a then 17-year-old Messi lasted less than two minutes before he earned himself a red card.
It came when the forward elbowed an opponent in the face while attempting to dribble the ball. The referee showed the teenager no mercy, and quickly ended his highly-anticipated Argentina debut.
