With VAR hot on the agenda, Premier League referees are receiving more criticism than they’re used to. Their performances this weekend did them no favours.

Barely a fixture went by without an official receiving the ire of the officials. First, there was Javier Hernandez’s handball goal on Friday. That was followed by a performance from Mike Dean’s in Tottenham’s loss to Burnley that had Mauricio Pochettino raging.

Eddie Howe was similarly furious after some questionable decision making in his side’s draw with Wolves. Even a 0-0 at Old Trafford had Ole Gunnar Solskjaer questioning the referee.

All in all, it was not a good weekend for the Premier League’s officials. It’s becoming evident that improvement is needed across the board.
