Tottenham Hotspur dominates Borussia Dortmund at home

With a stellar performance by Jan Vertonghen, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley Stadium. Son also scored.

It the second Champions League night of 2019, Tottenham Hotspur received Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium in the Round of 16’s first leg.

The Spurs were coming from a very brave reaction to the absences of key players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli, South Korean forward Son Heung-min was the man stepping up to the challenge and he was the one who made things possible against one of the most competitive squads in the Bundesliga today.

Borussia Dortmund has dropped the game level in recent months as 2019 began, they haven’t been able to live up to the same game level they displayed during the first half of the season and today they paid their distractions against a ruthless Spurs squad.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino keeps proving that he can take the best out of the most complicated situation, it doesn’t matter if he has the best players available because the whole group works as a team regardless of the rival.

This Wednesday at Wembley Stadium was memorable for the way they dominated the match, especially during the second half when they scored all three goals of the game against Dortmund.

After a 0-0 result in the first half, Tottenham Hotspur responded quickly at the start of the second half through Son Heung-min’s goal that came after a beautiful assist from Jan Vertonghen.

The Belgian defender was arguably the best player of the game this evening, but Son was the one who paved the way for a very important victory that practically seals the next-round ticket for Tottenham and secures both Harry Kane and Dele Alli’s participation in the potential quarterfinal.

Borussia Dortmund really struggled to get through the Spurs’ defense, Jadon Sancho was completely neutralized by Mauricio Pochettino’s tactics and they weren’t able to find a single space that could give them the advantage to score at least one goal.

But the locals weren’t able to secure the result until the final ten minutes of the match, they really struggled to get there but they finally did it thanks to Jan Vertonghen’s amazing timing.

Jadon Sancho, Borussia Dortmund, Bundesliga, Lucien Favre

Lucien Favre refuses to discuss Jadon Sancho’s suspension

Lucien Favre remained silent on Borussia Dortmund's shock decision to suspend Jadon Sancho following Saturday's 1-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

It was just after Hugo Lloris saved Tottenham from the equalizer, the Belgian player finished a counter-attack that Serge Aurier set up and scored the second goal of the evening for Spurs.

With a few minutes still left on the clock, striker Fernando Llorente came in for Lucas Moura to see if he would be able to score one more goal that would give Tottenham Hotspur more leverage for the return leg.

Eriksen was the one who assisted the Spaniard near the end of the match for the Spurs’ third goal of the evening, a final 3-0 result that gives Tottenham a great boost for the next match against Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park just a few weeks from now.

This result is very unfortunate for the German squad, they were considered the underdogs by many and they really disappointed the fans today.

But in reality, all the credit must go to Mauricio Pochettino once again because he’s been able to keep his “Midas Touch” intact and he might get to experience the Champions League’s quarterfinals.

The most impressive part of this massive achievement, is that the Premier League squad will get this far in the competition even after not signing a single player in the two transfer windows this season.

If Daniel Levy doesn’t get Pochettino new players by next season, the Argentine manager should resign and get himself a club that values him better as what he really is: one of the best managers in the world today.
