Juventus have officially announced the signing of Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax in a deal believed to be in the region of €70 million with the player set for a medical.
After what seemed like an eternity, Matthijs de Ligt has officially signed for a major European club this summer. The Dutchman had been a target of some of the biggest clubs in Europe including Manchester United, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
While he was initially linked with a reunion with former Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong at Ajax, de Ligt wasn’t able to agree personal terms with the Spanish giants.
Manchester United was then touted as a potential destination with the Red Devils willing to make de Ligt a cornerstone of their rebuild while offering him regular game time. However, with the club in transition, the highly coveted defender chose not to join them.
And while Paris Saint-Germain were in the lead for his signature at one point, the allure of playing in the Serie A alongside Cristiano Ronaldo was too hard to turn down for de Ligt.
The youngster has agreed a deal worth €12 million a year and is expected to play a starring role for the club.

After starring for Ajax all through last season and nearly guiding them to Champions League glory, de Ligt would be expected to become a key member of Maurizio Sarri’s team. The Old Lady is desperate to end its nearly two decade long wait for a European trophy and with the squad they have, the Italians are expected to lift the title.
Rather than making a long statement, Juventus simply posted a video of de Ligt introducing himself to the club with the message, “DELIGTED?”

The move represents a major coup for Juventus who are definitely becoming a destination of choice for some of the best players on the planet.
But only time will tell if such a massive spending spree was worth it or not.
