4. Wayne Rooney to Manchester City
The ultimate betrayal?
Rooney became a bit of a diva in 2010 and wanted a big pay rise for his new United contract. Naturally, this didn’t go down well.
Negotiations broke down and the striker’s Red Devils career was nearing its end. However, he went one step too far by almost agreeing to a big-money move to local rivals City.
But Sir Alex Ferguson had none of it and soon put Rooney back on the right path.
“Apparently Alex had cancelled his training session, walked into a room and said: ‘Right, you’re not leaving here until we figure this out,” ex-Man City CEO Garry Cook told The Athletic.
Rooney eventually left United in 2017 as their all-time record scorer on 253 goals and 146 assists in 559 games.
