3. Diego Maradona to Sheffield United
English football has welcomed many great Argentinian players down the years like Sergio Aguero, Juan Sebastian Veron and Osvaldo Ardiles.
But it turns out English fans missed out on a huge treat in witnessing one of football’s greatest talents in Diego Maradona in 1978.
The 17-year-old was ready to enter Europe after impressing in his homeland. Therefore, Sheffield United launched a cheeky bid to sign him for £200,000.
Had that gone through, Maradona would have started his European career in the English second division!
But Sheffield United ultimately signed Alejandro Sabella from River Plate for £160,000 instead. Talk about a blunder!
