New Atletico Madrid signing Kieran Trippier revealed he “can’t wait” to start working and learning from manager Diego Simeone.
Trippier completed a surprise €22m transfer from Tottenham to Atletico on Wednesday evening. He’s signed up at the Wanda Metropolitano until June 2022, and will likely replace the departed Juanfran in the team.
The 28-year-old made a name for himself during England’s impressive run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018. He even scored a resounding free-kick before the Three Lions crashed out of the last-four to runners-up Croatia.
However, Trippier struggled to repeat his solid displays from Russia over at Spurs last season. This, in fact, even caused him to lose his right-back spot in the England team to Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold for the UEFA Nations League last month.
Now, the former Manchester City youth player has decided to sign up for last season’s La Liga runners-up Atletico and opened up on Simeone’s influence behind his decision to head to Spain.
“It’s an amazing feeling. I’ve always wanted to play abroad and what a place to play,” Trippier told Atletico’s YouTube.
“A fantastic team, an unbelievable manager and I’m just looking forward to getting on with it now.
“They’ve been to some major finals, they’ve done so well in LaLiga over the years. They have world-class players and a brilliant manager.
“I can’t wait to work with the manager, learn from the manager and help the team be a success in the future. You can see how close he is with his squad.”
Serie A giants Juventus and Napoli were reportedly interested in Trippier themselves along with Manchester United.
But the England international chose Atletico to become the club’s eighth signing of the summer transfer window.
Joao Felix, Marcos Llorente, Renan Lodi, Felipe, Ivan Saponjic, Hector Herrera and Nicolas Ibañez have all arrived in Madrid.
