On this very day in 2015 Manchester United got a victory at Anfield over Liverpool courtesy of two very special goals from Juan Mata.
In 2015 things were very different at both Manchester United and Liverpool.
United was in the Louis Van Gaal era and sat fourth in the League. Liverpool was fifth and under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers.
United had given a dominant Liverpool a very undeserved 3-0 thumping at Old Trafford earlier in the season. Rodgers high pressing Liverpool was out for revenge.
Unfortunately, they were undone once more by the tactical genius of Dutch managerial legend Van Gaal.
Much was made at the start of the game with United boss’ decision to start Juan Mata over big summer signing Angel Di Maria.
However, after only 14 minutes Van Gaal had proven his doubters wrong.
A scintillating defense splitting pass from fellow Spaniard Ander Herrera set up Mata for a neat finish from an acute angle.
Then in the second-half following a Steven Gerrard sending off, Mata doubled United’s lead with arguably one of the best goals of his illustrious career.
A crafty chip to the right side of the penalty area about ten yards out from Di Maria. Mata launched himself into a side on scissor kick.
It left Mingolet watching the ball sail past him.
Sturridge got a consolation goal, and let’s be honest the season didn’t really pan out well for either team.
However, the day will go down in United history as the day Juan Mata undid Liverpool.
