Manchester United legend Jaap Stam risks the wrath of the Old Trafford faithful as he heaps praise on Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.
Jaap Stam was described by Sir Alex Ferguson as one of his biggest mistakes.
What the legendary manager was referring to was the sale of a great defender to Lazio.
Stam is one of the finest defenders the Premier League has seen and was widely regarded as one of the best defenders in world football at his prime.
The Old Trafford faithful can still be heard singing his name on match days almost 20 years after he left the club.
His recent comments though may have some United fans a little unimpressed, to say the least.
The retired Dutch international is certainly an authority when it comes to assessing the defensive qualities of a player.
However, to heap praise on an opposing player and a Liverpool one no less will not be appreciated.
In an interview with Stadium Astro, he likens his compatriot to himself.
“It’s always been discussed in Holland and everybody was saying: ‘we need another defender like Jaap’.”
“Eventually, Virgil came out and he started late.”
“Yeah, maybe [he’s] even better, I don’t know.”
“Virgil is a presence, that’s very important as a football player if you want to play in the highest leagues and the biggest clubs.”
“Positioning yourself is very important.”
” In possession but also out of possession because it helps you a lot. You get more time to do things as well and he’s doing a fantastic job.”
