Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot could have gone to a host of other “great European clubs” according to his agent.

In an interview reported by the Portuguese outlet Record, Dalot’s agent Carlos Goncalves said there were plenty of options for his client in the summer of 2018.

Dalot was signed by former United manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho claimed he was perhaps the best in right back in Europe if not world football for his age.

Dalot arrived at United while recovering from surgery.

During his time at United, he has since suffered a number of smaller niggling injuries, thus inhibiting his opportunities and development at the club.

It seems a little hard to believe that they were lining up out the door to sign Dalot.

He has far from set the world alight since he arrived in Manchester.

However, his agent credits Jose Mourinho with convincing the player that his future was at the Theatre of Dreams.

He said:

“Diogo was injured before [he joined] Manchester United.”

“So Jose Mourinho was very important because making a transfer for a player who has just been operated on involves a lot of courage.”

But Goncalves is adamant they were just one of many interested parties.

He added:

“It was Diogo’s choice. It was a case where we had several solutions for him and the player decided where he wanted to play.”

“I can’t say, but they were other great European clubs.”

The agent believed Dalot made an impressive start to his United career, but injuries are what have prohibited him from displaying his very best.

He continued:

“The first year was good for a 19-year-old at a club like Manchester United and in the Premier League.”

“Unfortunately he again had some minor injuries [at the beginning of this season], now eradicated.”

He is confident though that given the chance, he can still make a point.

He concluded:

“Of course, we hope this year can be a statement year.”

It is highly unlikely that Dalot will get too many chances, once new right-back Aaron Wan Bissaka is fit again.

United paid over 50 million for the Englishman and up until his injury, and he has been somewhat of a revelation so far.
