Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has no doubts over his decision to start Juan Brandariz “Chumi” in last week’s Copa del Rey first leg at Levante UD

The 19-year-old defender was named as a starter in last Thursday’s shock 2-1 defeat to Levante, despite being suspended for picking up a fifth booking for the B team in a second division game.

Due to this, Barcelona could be expelled from the competition with Levante president Quico Catalan having vowed to lodge a complaint to the Spanish FA (RFEF) over the matter.

But Valverde remains unconcerned and insists he was right to play Chumi.

“We have no doubt about Chumi,” said Valverde, according to One Football.

“Not before, not after, or during. We believe that tomorrow we must be in the draw. We are sure that we did it well.

“We knew perfectly well that Chumi was sanctioned, he could not be used in the match against Eibar [in La Liga].

“We are convinced of what we have done. We have acted in an absolutely correct way. We have won where we had to win. It is very clear.”

Barcelona won the return leg on Thursday night 3-0 following Ousmane Dembele’s brace and a Lionel Messi goal to book their quarter-final spot with a 4-2 aggregate win.
