Virgil van Dijk lost out in the Ballon d’Or race to Lionel Messi who deservedly won his sixth award, making him the record holder.

Even though winning Ballon d’Or is every footballer’s dream, Van Dijk wasn’t too disappointed after coming in second.

Instead, he used the opportunity to highlight Messi’s incredible talent.

“It was an amazing year, but there’s a couple of players like that who are a bit unnatural,” Van Dijk said, as quoted by Standard.

“So you need to respect greatness as well.

“I was close, but there was just someone a little bit better.”

Van Dijk will now put all his focus on winning the Premier League with Liverpool after a 30-year drought.
