The Netherlands pulled out a close win against Belarus in a crucial qualifying match which saw them keep the top of the group ahead of Germany.
Even though Wijnaldum scored a brace in the first half, the Dutch faced a lot of pressure from Belarus in the second, who even scored to make it 2-1.
However, the team captain, Virgil van Dijk isn’t happy with his team’s performance.
Noting that close calls like this shouldn’t happen, Van Dijk told NOS:
“The second half was, to put it mildly, not good. We lost the ball a lot in midfield after half-time, which allowed them to counter-attack.
“They weren’t really dangerous, but we must do that better. We have to look at ourselves in the mirror.”
Van Dijk warned about events like these, as the team’s ambitions are high:
“We all want to go to the European Championship. The whole of the Netherlands is yearning for that, including the players of course.
“We are close, but we have to analyse the second-half performance and then finish the job in the next international break.”
The Netherlands will have a chance to secure Euro 2020 spot with a point from their next match against Northern Ireland.
The crucial moment of their qualifiers happened in their last match against Northern Ireland, where they came back after losing for a big 3-1 win.
