Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal encouraged Matthijs de Ligt to make a switch to Manchester City this summer.

Ajax captain De Ligt’s future has been a big talking point in the transfer market for several months. With a host of big clubs to pick from, the 19-year-old will leave Amsterdam.

The Dutch centre-back recently revealed he’s yet to decide on his future. Although Barcelona are favourites to sign him.

But Van Gaal, who coached Ajax to three Eredivisie titles and a Champions League, reckons De Ligt would shine under Pep Guardiola.

The 67-year-old’s remarks come as somewhat of a surprise given United’s own interest in signing De Ligt.

“I think De Ligt fits perfectly with Manchester City,” former Ajax boss Peter Bosz told FOX Sports.

“Vincent Kompany is already gone and Nicolas Otamendi is not good enough. Then I would love to see him next to Aymeric Laporte.”

Van Gaal then said: “I think exactly the same.

“Although De Ligt can go to Barcelona too, because I don’t like their central defenders either.

“He could play at Barcelona, but he could play for Manchester City also, and in that case, I would choose Pep Guardiola over Lionel Messi.”

The ex-Barcelona manager is worried about Frenkie de Jong’s development at Camp Nou next season.

“I think it will be very difficult for him there,” said Van Gaal.

“Not only because he might get a different role, but he also has to play those other players from the starting line-up.

“He is also lucky that Barcelona has been eliminated in the semi-finals (of the Champions League), Because then their status will be different.

“I think it’s a great player, but I think [Ivan] Rakitic is also a great player. And I wanted to buy [Arturo] Vidal at Manchester United five years ago.

“I think that as a player you should also choose a club where you can always play. The question is whether that is justified in Barcelona.

I hope so, because at that age you have to play every game. I think he could have made better choices because I think the entire world is waiting for Frenkie de Jong. I am so positive about him.”
