Raphael Varane has played both with and against the very best, he reveals the secret to handling Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s inspiration.

There are few who can say they have played both with and against the best footballers in the World. But Varane is one of them.

French World Cup winner Raphael Varane has had the privilege of calling Cristiano Ronaldo his teammate. While he has also had the ultimate challenge of keeping Lionel Messi quiet.

In an interview with La Liga, the 26-year-old defender reveals all when it comes to the GOATS.

Success against Messi is no mean feat, and certainly not something for a one-man-band.

He said:

“You can’t defend as you do with others and it takes teamwork.”

“You can’t leave him room.”

This was a tactic employed by Varane and his Real Madrid side in the most recent El Clasico to great effect.

Varane used to be teammates with the other half of the GOAT battling duo Cristiano Ronaldo.

Being only 18 when he made the switch from lowly Lens to the mighty Madrid, he needed guidance and support.

While his defensive partners inspired him to be a better defender, Ronaldo inspired him to simply be better.

He added:

“I was inspired by players like Pepe or Sergio Ramos because they are defenders.

“And by someone like Cristiano Ronaldo, who is an example for any footballer.”
