Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard hopes for a clean start under new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl

The Denmark international arrived at St Mary’s in the summer from Borussia Monchengladbach on a four-year contract.

However, in what is his first spell of football outside of Germany, Vestergaard has only started seven of Southampton’s 15 Premier League matches.

But the arrival of former RB Leipzig boss Hasenhuttl has got Vestergaard hopeful of a fresh start at the south coast.

“You want to leave an impression and show the best side of yourself,” said Vestergaard, according to Daily Echo.

“It’s a new start for everyone. He comes in with an open mind and everyone will start from zero.

“I don’t think this is just for me, I think everyone is now at the same level and needs to show themselves.

“This isn’t a good situation at the moment and no one is happy, but it is a good opportunity to start over.”

Competing with the likes of Wesley Hoedt, Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida for a spot in the centre of Southampton’s defence has proved challenging for Vestergaard.

“This is a very competitive league and a very competitive team,” Vestergaard added.

“We have a lot of good centre-backs who are fighting for two spots and obviously, everyone wants to play every game.

“I’m not happy with that, but I know I still have to show who I really am and what I can give to this team.

“I’m really just focusing on myself and getting the best of me on the pitch.”

Southampton lost 3-1 to Tottenham at Wembley on Wednesday night and remain 18th in the Premier League with just one win in 15 attempts.

Hasenhuttl will make his debut in the Southampton dugout away to Cardiff City on Saturday.
