Emre Can scores an absolute banger on his first start for new club Borussia Dortmund, but it still wasn’t enough as they lose 4-3 to Bayer Leverkusen.
Emre Can made the switch this winter from Juventus to Dortmund. It was only his second appearance, and in fact, his first start for the Bundesliga side.
Things, however, have not quite gone to plan as yet. His first game saw his new side lose to Werder Bremen, and now they lost to Bayer Leverkusen.
But for Can himself at least there was something positive from today’s outcome. The goal he scored was an absolute screamer.
Leverkusen took the lead in the 20th minute through Volland. But that edge was short livid as Mats Hummels pulled the visitors level only two minutes later.
Then Can steps up and shows his class. In the 33rd minute, he unleashed a wicked shot from 25 yards plus out.
He whipped the ball ferociously with his right foot. It rose, curled and smashed into the top corner of the goal.
Dortmund could not hold the lead for long though. In the 43rd minute as the half time break approached, they switched off and allowed Volland to get his and Leverkusen’s second.
The second half saw Achraf Hakimi remind the world what all the fuss is about when he set up Guerreiro. His goal gave Lucien Favre’s side the lead once more.
It appeared that Dortmund was about to climb to the top of the Bundesliga. All they had to do was hold on to the lead.
As the game entered the final ten minutes, their world collapsed, as did their defense.
A goal from Bailey in the 81st minute and one from Bender in the 82nd saw one minute of madness and the game slip out of Dortmunds hands and into the waiting arms of Bayer Leverkusen.
