In the midst of being the difference maker for their respective teams, the two talismanic ex-teammates had a heart-warming exchange.
Among the numerous reasons to revel in Wednesday night’s crunch clash between Portugal and France was the reunion of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.
It was Ronaldo and Benzema’s first meeting ever since their separation in the summer of 2018. They formed an effective and efficient attacking duo in the Real Madrid team that scaled great heights of success.
The excitement on the faces of the two old friends over the reunion was visible right from the start. Moments before kick-off, Benzema was seen smirking towards Ronaldo, who responded with a cheeky smile.
CR7 then went on to congratulate Benzema after he put France on the front foot from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.
As soon as the referee blew for half-time, the pair hugged and chatted on their way to the tunnel before swapping shirts.
It turned out to be a memorable night for both the players. Ronaldo matched Ali Daei’s tally of 109 goals to became the joint-top scorer in men’s international football while also became the all-time top scorer in the World Cup and European Championship combined.
Benzema, meanwhile, was able to score his first goal for France since re-earning a call-up to the national team.
