Atalanta won 3-4 on the night in a seven-goal thriller, with four from Josip Ilicic in a spectacle that was sadly played out in an empty Mestalla Stadium.

Barring a miracle, Valencia was playing more for pride than anything. The Spaniards were trailing 4-1 from game one.

The game was dominated by Atalanta’s Josip Ilicic who scored four on the night.

The visitors opened the scoring when Ilicic had the opportunity to convert a penalty after only three minutes.

It could not have been worse for the hosts.

But in the 21st minute, a possible reprieve. Gameiro made the most of a defensive mess by Atlanta to score with a tap in.

But before the break, the lead was restored by the Italians.

Yet another penalty converted by Ilicic. Diakhaby the culprit again. Following a foul for the first and now a handball for the second, he was lucky to still be on the pitch.

The second half saw the home side pounce early. Again it was Gameiro, in the 51st minute he got his head to the ball to tie things up on the night.

Then in the 67th minute, Valencia took the lead for the first time, with a splendid lob from the highly sought after, Ferran Torres.

However, just as they scored four in the first leg, the visitors Atalanta were determined to do the same in the second leg.

In the 82nd minute, Ilicic got him and his sides fourth.

The Slovenian forward saved the best until last, with a beautiful curling shot to leave the keeper hapless.

4-3 to Atalanta on the night, 8-4 on aggregate. The Champions League debutants are hading to the quarter-finals.

The Italians dedicated the win to their fans back home in Bergamo who have been hit harder than most by the coronavirus.
