On this very day, Manchester United won their last Premier League title and Robin Van Persie scored a hat-trick in a decisive game against Aston Villa.
It was April 22nd, the final season of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign at Manchester United. How else would Fergie go out, but with another Premier League title.
The date was April 22nd, 2013, a win in the game against Aston Villa would ensure that Sir Alex left on a high, as United would be out of reach of their noisy neighbors Manchester City.
Old Trafford was packed, all 75,000 seats filled. A win and Ferguson would lead United to their 20th league title.
After being pipped to the title the previous year by the last minute of the season goal from Sergio Aguero, Ferguson mounted an all-out assault on the league before he called time on perhaps the greatest managerial career ever.
So it was quite fitting that it was the Dutchman that wrapped things up on this day.
It was only two minutes into the game when the former Gunner opened the scoring and set the wheels in motion for another title for the Red Devils. A typical poacher’s goal, sneaking in at the back post.
Then in the 13th minute, he scored his second, and perhaps one of the best volleys of all time.
A massive inch-perfect pass from Rooney from his own half saw Van Persie take a quick glance at the flighted ball. He stepped perfectly into the volley to smash the ball home.
The party was in full swing with less than a quarter of the game gone.
If it wasn’t already over, it was a little after 30 minutes.
Van Persie got his hat-trick. A neat pass in front of the goal from Giggs and Van Persie danced around defenders before burying the ball.
