March 22nd, 2015 Luis Suarez scored “that” goal as Barcelona beat Real Madrid in El Clasico on the road to the treble.
It was the 2014/15 La Liga season, Barcelona was under the guidance of now Spain manager Luis Enrique.
It was a season to remember for the Catalonians.
They were en route to treble. The La Liga crown, the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League.
The only Spanish club to do so twice in their history.
As good as Barcelona were, they had suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to bitter rivals Real Madrid. That was in the first El Clasico of the season at the Bernabeu back in December of 2014.
Now in the second half of the season, it was the return fixture at Camp Nou.
The visitors had the better chances in the opening minutes. With Isco coming closest in the 13th minute.
But it was free-kick whipped in from the left-hand side by Messi that was met by Mathieu in the 19th minute that gave Barca the lead.
But the joy was short-lived as about ten minutes later, Real made their pressure count.
A cute backheel from Benzema set up who else but Ronaldo who slid in to beat the defender and stab the ball home.
It was tit for tat as both sides went for the win. There was no holding back in an all or nothing affair.
It was in the 56th minute though and “that” goal came.
A stunning 50 plus yard pass from Dani Alves from his own half.
It was cushioned with one perfect touch on the outside of Suarez’s boot.
It appeared to take the Uruguayan out wide, but his next touch was a vicious cross goal shot that beat Casillas and sent the crowd into a state of delirium.
Barca held on despite Ronaldo and company’s best efforts.
