Inter Milan have improved in recently and can close the gap to Juventus in a couple of more years, says Christian Vieri.
The Nerazzurri’s bid for a first Serie A title since the 2009/10 campaign is almost certain to come to an end shortly due to the 20-point deficit they currently have to runaway leaders Juventus.
However, signs of progress have been evident recently at the San Siro with Inter qualifying for the Champions League last term for the first time in six seasons and they seem set to match the feat in third-place in the Serie A table at the moment.
Therefore, former Inter striker Vieri is confident things will soon turn around for his old club if they continue their current progress.
“I believe that in a couple of years, Inter can close a large part of the current gap,” Vieri told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Besides they’re still third. In this year-and-a-half with [Luciano] Spalletti, Inter have changed a lot in a positive way and are more solid than in recent years.
“Unfortunately, in Italy, we think Inter and Milan must always have the strength to win the Serie A.”
The 45-year-old also gave his views on new AC Milan signing Krzysztof Piatek, who has already scored three goals in his first three games since completing his €35m transfer from Genoa.
“I really like Piatek. He goes deep, splits the opposing line of defence and runs the attack all by himself. He’s someone who hurts you, always,” said Vieri.
The former Italy international praised another one of his old clubs in Juventus for their capture of Cristiano Ronaldo and anticipates an exciting last-16 Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid on February 20.
“When a similar alien [Ronaldo] chooses you, it means the club are doing things in the best way. It’s a show of strength,” added Vieri.
“Juve against Atletico Madrid will be like a final.”
Vieri scored a total of 236 goals in 476 career games at club level for the likes of Inter, Juventus, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.
The Italian finished as the top Serie A scorer twice throughout his playing days and was named Serie A Footballer of the Year in 1999.
