After finishing a dream season for Liverpool, it is reported that Virgil van Dijk is keen on signing a long-term contract with the Reds.
Virgil van Dijk’s arrival to Liverpool during the 2018 winter transfer window was filled with doubts, the fans didn’t know if he would improve as a player.
The Dutch defender initially struggled to reach the level he eventually showed this season, but Jurgen Klopp always trusted in his talents.
At the very start of the Premier League tournament, Van Dijk started to spend some quality time with some of the club’s biggest legends and he immediately fell in love with the tradition.
Virgil quickly understood that Liverpool is one of the most special football clubs in the world, which is why he has made a transcendental decision for his career.
The player knows that the upcoming years will be crucial for English football, the Reds are at the very top of the food chain right now and he wants to help them maintain themselves there.
There are still many challenges ahead for the club and for him, this is a player who is currently at the top of every bookie’s list to win the Ballon d’Or at the end of the year.
Only Lionel Messi is above him right now, but Van Dijk will certainly win the award if the Argentine fails to win the Copa America this summer.
It has been an unforgettable year for Virgil at Liverpool, one that has pushed him to make this decision.
A Red for many years to come.
According to a report from ESPN, Virgil van Dijk has already approached the club’s board of directors to talk about a contract extension.
The Dutch player doesn’t want to waste any more time and he doesn’t want the media to speculate about his future.
Virgil is a Red at heart and he wants to express it in the best possible manner, which is by signing a long-term contract with the club.
The player already makes €11 million per season but he has certainly earned an increase after his latest accomplishments.
Van Dijk is only 18 months into his first contract for Liverpool and he is already considered one of the best defenders in the world.
There is even an argument right now of Virgil being already at the very top of the best, he is even competing against Messi to win the Ballon d’Or.
His impact has been so massive for his club and country, that this year of his is even better than the one Sergio Ramos had in 2014.
Back then, the Spanish defender was Real Madrid’s most important player of the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
Much like Van Dijk did during the final against Tottenham, Ramos was the game’s MVP.
However, the biggest difference between the two is that Virgil performed at the top of his game throughout the whole season and Ramos didn’t.

In regards to the Ballon d’Or possibility, Virgil van Dijk also has a summer trophy that he can win with his national team.
Messi’s performance in Copa America will be important for the Argentine to possibly win the award, but Van Dijk can take the definitive advantage if he ends up winning the UEFA Nations League next weekend.
The Netherlands have a crucial semifinal match against England on Thursday first, they would face Portugal in the final if they manage to defeat the Three Lions.
Van Dijk has a massive advantage with his country because he currently forms one of the most impressive defensive duos in the world with Matthijs de Ligt.
The next five days will decide if Virgil actually has a claim to fight for the Ballon d’Or, but he has already proved himself many times over for Liverpool.
The club’s board of directors have to seriously consider the player’s request to sign a long-term contract, they should also write him a blank check.
If he remains at this level, there is no way that clubs such as Real Madrid won’t come knocking on his door in a few years from now.
Van Dijk certainly fits the profile of a player that clubs such as Los Blancos or FC Barcelona would like to sign for their squads. Liverpool has to keep all those sharks away.
Pucker up 😘🏆
