Joe Gomez suggests having a well-functioning relationship with Virgil van Dijk off the pitch helps them maintain a better on-field partnership.
Joe Gomez, although not always the first choice, has become a reliable player for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp this season.
Following the injury of Joel Matip early in the season, the 22-year old center-back was called on to take his place in the line-up. His performances received plaudits as Liverpool stretched their lead onto the top of the table while registering several clean sheets in the process.
Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic and is currently in his fifth season at the club.
The defender has looked past his initial injury setbacks and managed to form an impressive partnership with Virgil van Dijk.
“I was a young center-back, hadn’t really gotten as many games there as I would have liked,” Gomez told Sky Sports. “But as soon as he came in, he reached out with open arms and we formed a bond straight away.
“The fact that he is a down-to-earth person off the pitch, we get on really well and we have a great relationship.
“We talk and in times like this, we FaceTime and speak about general things. So, that helps on the pitch when you have an understanding. He’s your mate at the end of the day.”
